Local advertising questions, answered

Short answers first, followed by the detail behind them.

Local advertising

How can I find advertising opportunities near my business?

Define the area your customers come from, then map the places inside it that carry advertising — grocery stores, pharmacies, gyms, screens and roadside formats.

Most local businesses know their trade area but not what advertising exists inside it. A radius search starts from your address, draws the distance customers realistically travel, and lists the advertising environments within it. Availability and pricing still need to be confirmed with each media owner before anything is booked.

What are alternatives to Google Ads for a local business?

Place-based advertising, direct mail, local radio, sponsorships and community media all reach people offline, in the places they already spend time.

Search ads reach people who are already looking. Place-based media reaches people in their daily routine — shopping, waiting, working out — before they search. Many businesses use both: offline placements to build familiarity in the trade area and search to capture demand when it appears.

What types of locations can businesses advertise in?

Common options include grocery stores, shopping carts, pharmacies, gyms, restaurants, wellness venues, digital screens, billboards and alternative formats.

Which locations make sense depends on where your customers go. A dental practice may favor pharmacies and grocery stores near its office; an auto dealer may favor grocery stores across its primary market area. Each environment offers different formats, dwell times and creative options.

Place-based advertising

What is place-based advertising?

Place-based advertising is advertising delivered in physical environments where a defined audience regularly visits, such as stores, gyms and waiting areas.

Instead of buying an audience online, a business buys presence in specific places. Because the location defines who sees the message, place-based media works well for businesses with a clear geographic trade area.

How does local place-based advertising work?

You choose venues inside your trade area, place creative in formats those venues offer, and attach a response path such as a scannable offer.

The typical sequence is: define the radius, identify venues, confirm availability and pricing with the media owner, produce creative, run the campaign for a set flight, and review the responses that can be observed.

What is radius-based advertising?

Radius-based advertising limits placements to a set distance around a business, so spend stays inside the area customers actually come from.

The right radius varies by category — a coffee shop's customers may come from a mile or two away, while a car dealership may draw from 15 to 25 miles. The radius can also be shaped around priority ZIP codes or competitive areas.

Out-of-home advertising

What is out-of-home advertising?

Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is any advertising people see outside their homes — billboards, transit, screens and in-venue displays.

Place-based media is a subset of OOH focused on specific venues. Digital OOH uses screens that can rotate or schedule creative.

Are there alternatives to billboards for local businesses?

Yes. In-store displays, shopping cart ads, gym and pharmacy placements, and venue screens reach people closer to where they buy.

Billboards reach drivers at a distance and speed. Venue-based formats reach people on foot, often with more time to notice a message and act on an offer.

Advertising measurement

How do you measure physical advertising?

By giving each placement a response path — a unique code, link, phone number or offer — and counting the responses that come back.

Physical media cannot track every viewer. What can be observed is response: scans, claims, calls, form submissions and redemptions. Tying each response to a placement shows which locations and offers generate activity. A scan alone does not create a customer record; a record exists only when someone voluntarily submits their information.

Automotive

How can a dealership advertise within its PMA?

Map advertising environments inside the primary market area — especially grocery stores shoppers visit weekly — and pair them with a trackable monthly offer.

A dealer's PMA is the geography where it is expected to sell and service vehicles. Grocery placements across the PMA keep the dealership visible where households shop, and a dynamic code lets the offer change monthly without replacing the physical ad.

Home services

How can an HVAC company advertise locally?

Place ads in environments homeowners visit — grocery stores, hardware and home-improvement areas, pharmacies — inside the service area, ideally before peak seasons.

Home-service demand is often urgent, so awareness has to exist before the need does. Consistent presence in the service area, paired with a seasonal offer such as a tune-up, builds recognition that pays off when equipment fails.

Multi-location businesses

How should a multi-location business plan local media?

Plan each location's radius separately, then coordinate creative, offers and measurement centrally so results can be compared across markets.

Each location has its own trade area and competitive set. A shared framework — consistent offers, response paths and reporting — lets a brand compare markets fairly while still tailoring placements locally.

Advertising costs

How much does local advertising cost?

It varies by venue, format, market, season, campaign length and advertiser category, so pricing is confirmed per campaign rather than published.

AdRadius IQ does not list public prices because rates change by location and availability. After a market analysis, current options, formats, dates and pricing are confirmed with media owners and presented in a private proposal.

Campaign planning

How do I choose the right advertising radius?

Start from where current customers actually come from, then adjust for your category, objective and competitive areas.

Customer addresses, service-area boundaries and typical travel distance for your category are the best inputs. Too wide wastes spend; too narrow misses customers.

What is the difference between advertising discovery and campaign execution?

Discovery identifies and evaluates the opportunities in a market; execution confirms, books, produces and runs the campaign.

AdRadius IQ separates the two so businesses can see what exists before committing. Nothing is booked until availability, pricing and dates are confirmed in a proposal.
